Trailer Analysis- Civil War

Release date: April 29, 2016 (UK) Directors: Russo Brothers

Camerawork
The camerawork in the movie can be the difference between creating something that is successful and something that is unsuccessful. A variety of angles and shots helps to keep the viewer engaged.
The trailer starts off with an establishing shot of an icy mountain, captured at a low angle, craning forward. This automatically makes the audience aware of what type of location the film is going to be set in. You are then shown a close up shot of a door opening, but you do not see who is coming out of the door. This is the first enigma code of the trailer. The audience would guess that this must be an important character, being in a close up; but why have they not been shown who it is yet.

After this, the animated comic strip leads into the Marvel Studio Logo. This would attract a wide audience, as no matter how old you are, Marvel can be enjoyed by everyone. Marvel has created some of the best movies, and therefore you can be assured that if you see this movie, it is going to be a good one.

The first shot that you see of the protagonists is a wide shot of them all sitting around a large table. There are several close ups of each characters face, showing that each individual is unhappy/annoyed at what they are being shown, that the viewer cannot see. This is again another enigma code, as the audience would want to know what they are being shown, and why it is making them so unhappy. Putting the USPs (the well-known actors and actresses) at the beginning of the trailer, immediately grabs the attention of anyone who likes these particular actors. The actors themselves are diverse, both ethnicity wise and class wise. This will mean that it will not just appeal to one certain group of individuals, but to everyone.
This is followed by snippets of the action packed shots which are to come in the movie. Action shots will appeal to the male side of the target audience, as they stereotypically enjoy more violent films.

Sound
The sounds that should be included are relatively easy to guess, as there are some that are included in all. This includes pleonastic sounds such as explosions.
The trailer is started by a non-diegetic asynchronous sound of a chime, accompanied with a voice over from Chris Evans. A voiceover adds tension and excitement, as you do not know who is speaking. What he actually says, is also another enigma code. ‘In this job, we try to save as many people as we can…sometimes that doesn’t mean everybody.’  The type of questions you could get from this are why do people need saving, and why aren’t they all saved?

The trailer continues with a non-diegtetic background track, this piece of music helps build an atmosphere. Being upbeat, faced paced and loud, people that are relatively unfamiliar with the Marvel movies will discover the genre of action from this.
Lastly, one of the loudest sounds that can be heard, which will grab the audience’s attention, is the sound which is a convention of an action film. There are many pleonastic explosions, sounds of fighting and gunshots, This will appear heavily to the male audiences who are interested in violent scenes.
One of the final parts of the trailer is Iron Man (Robert Downey JR) saying ‘You just started a war.’ This would encourage the audience to go and see the rest of the movie as they would want to see what the outcome of the war ends up being.

Lighting
The lighting from the very start of the trailer is low key, as they start underground, but even outside, it is during the evening. The low key lighting could foreshadow the dark events that may be to come in the movie, and also hides the identities  and facial expressions of certain characters which can help create enigmas. When the main protagonists are first shown however, they are shown is a wide shot, in high key lighting. This will ensure that all of them are seen at their best. This also links into the fact that they ‘good guys’ are shown in high key lighting, as they contrast that of the ‘bad guys’ shown in low key lighting.
